Award Presentation

Last weekend saw a contingent of volunteers from the Branch attend Exmouth lifeboat station.

The occasion was the presentation of Rodger Withers silver badge. The group were given a tour of Exmouth’s new state of the art Shannon class lifeboat 13-03 R&J Welburn and its Supacat launch and recovery system. The systems on the boat give the crew a level of safety and advanced earch and rescue capability never before seen on an RNLI lifeboat.

Following the tour the group and volunteers from Exmouth sat down to a well received fish and chip lunch.
Well done to Rodger on achieving his silver badge

Changing the face of rescues at sea

Shannon Lifeboat

Shannon class lifeboat 13-01 by RNLI/ Nigel Millard

On 21 February 2014 the face of the RNLI carriage launched lifeboats will see the most radical change for many years. The first operational Shannon Class lifeboat will be delivered to Dungeness lifeboat station in Kent. The Shannon is different to her sisters by being driven by waterjets instead of propellers. The Shannon will, after a period of crew training, replace the Mersey class lifeboat that has served the station well for many years.

I shall be attending the media launch and will share the pictures of her arrival on the blog and in the gallery.

Watch this space.
